Winile Masuku
Winile started as a YEBO student in 2008 in the Tourism Management programme, but this turned out not to be the right direction for her. Although she did not pass her first year, we decided to give her a second chance because of her strong motivation. In 2009, she began studying Social Work at the University of Zululand.
YEBO Student (2009–2013)
Qualification: Social Work – University of Zululand, Empangeni (KZN)
After graduating in 2014, I was given the opportunity to complete a one-year SETA-funded internship as a social worker within the Department of Social Development. During this time, I was actively involved in the implementation of various generic social work programmes. This valuable experience opened doors for me, and in February 2015 I was appointed to a permanent position as a social worker, where I primarily worked in victim empowerment and substance abuse services.
In 2019, I transferred to a position closer to Nelspruit, allowing me to further develop my career while focusing on child protection and family services. This journey enabled me to put into practice the knowledge and skills I gained during my studies. I truly enjoy the work I do, and I am currently serving as a Senior Social Worker – a role I never imagined I would one day achieve.
My professional growth has had a profound impact on my personal life as well. Through my employment, I was able to significantly improve my living conditions by transforming my home from a single-room house into a comfortable two-bedroom home with a kitchen, living room, and bathroom. In March 2025, I also proudly purchased a new double-cab bakkie through employee benefits.
What humbles me most is not only my own progress, but also the achievements of my children. I am now able to support my daughters in their tertiary education. One completed her qualification in Development Studies in 2025 and will graduate in May 2026, while the other is currently in her third year of Turning and Fitting Engineering.
The support and contribution of YEBO have not only changed my life, but have positively impacted my entire family. My hope is to see YEBO continue to grow and reach many more vulnerable learners – just as I once was – giving them the opportunity to build a brighter and more secure future.
