Realizing kitchens in primary schools

In 2005, the government started a feeding scheme for primary schools. Among other things, the HIV/AIDS epidemic has left many children in the region orphaned; now the children at least receive a warm meal per day. The raw materials are delivered weekly, and the school itself must provide storage and cooking space. There are no resources for this. Mothers/Grandmothers cook outside in all weather for an average of about 600 students per school. A major wish is a place where they can cook under cover, including a safe storage area. We make a deal: YEBO sponsors the building materials, and as often happens, the mothers, helped by the children, make the bricks. The construction is carried out by involved community members. Fresh white paint on the interior wall, outside the traditional school color; yellow with brown.

Together with the Principal, we purchase the first construction materials for 3 primary schools; Zithulele, Matsamo, and Schoemansdal. Maintenance after completion is the responsibility of the school.
Cooking is still done in the kitchens, often an extra shed has been built. If possible, the Gogo’s (grandmothers) cook there, on wood!
